Despite the average weather over 20 French, Belgians and Brits made their way to the Abbeville track in Northern France on 21st of March for a pre-season shake down. In addition to Lotus Cup Europe competitors David Wilson was on hand from Lotus and Claude Gonzales from organisers LoTRDC to give advice and answer any questions regarding series regulations.
Whilst Production, 211 and Invite classes remain more or less the same as 2009 the Exige class has some major changes with the intention of bringing them closer to the 211’s. At Abbeville at least the gap between Denis Vandensavel and the Rasse brothers in their Exiges was smaller than last year when compared to the 211’s of Laurent Feve and Christophe Lisandre. However, Abbeville is not an average race circuit and we’ll know more at Nurburgring in six weeks.
Looking at the season ahead we should see a strong showing from the French, Belgian and German drivers at Magny Cours, Spa Francorchamps and Zolder, while last year’s leading UK drivers Scott Cruickshank and Gavin Kirby will no doubt be strong throughout the season.
A major positive so far is the introduction of a new French team who looks to bring six to eight cars as well as a number of new drivers from Germany and Austria to join Austria’s Peter Entenfellner and Klaus Requat who raced already in LCE in 2009.
Finally, despite a non expensive entry level with the Production class, as well as a flexible Invite class, Lotus Cup Europe is still looking for its first competitor from Switzerland and hopefully more from the Netherlands. However, there is still plenty time and with weekend entry fee’s just £450/€450 inclusive of free practice, qualifying and two races we shall hopefully see new entries from these countries as well.
The 2010 Lotus Cup Europe rounds are:
- 30 April & 1 May - Nürburgring GP (Germany)
- 19-20 June – Snetterton Lotus Festival (UK)
- 10-11 July – Magny Cours (France)
- 31 July-1 August – Brands Hatch GP (UK)
- 11-12 September – Zolder (Belgium)
- 1-3 October - Spa Francorchamps (Belgium)
- 23-24 October – Assen (Netherlands)
Each round consists of a minimum of Free Practice (20 mins), Qualifying (20 mins) and two races (20 mins & 30 mins), the entry fee being £450/€450 per round.
